Kenya: Feasibility Study, Design and Preparation of tender Documents for Gikindu Irrigation Scheme

This 9 months project was for Consultancy Services for Feasibility Study, Design and Preparation of Tender Documents for Gikindu Irrigation Scheme in Muranga District. The main purpose was to reduce poverty and food insecurity among the rural poor households by improving the performance of irrigation and marketing infrastructure, as well as enhanced methods of horticultural productivity. The project involved identifying and assessing the viability of opportunities for investments in irrigated agricultural production with a view to stabilizing national agricultural production, improving land and water resources productivity, facilitating economic empowerment of local communities and establishing a foundation for development of agribusiness. It also assessed the baseline environmental and social conditions, identify potential impacts from the project and develop appropriate environmental management and monitoring plans.

Malawi: Feasibility Study and Detailed Engineering Design and Preparation of Tender Documents for Zolokele Irrigation Scheme.

Consultancy services for this project involved caring out a feasibility study for the 45 ha irrigation scheme. Topographic survey for the entire scheme was undertaken to delineate and survey the boundaries of the scheme, to produce location map for the scheme, to determine canal alignment and cross sections as well as to locate and size the intake structures, to prepare longitudinal profiles and cross sections to determine required quantities of earth works and canal linings.

Malawi: Detailed Design and Construction Supervision of Walutundu Irrigation Project.

This was an irrigation project which was aimed at providing about 50 ha of land under irrigation. The project entailed qualitative and quantitative assessment of water resources, which was done by analyzing the climatological data from reliable meteorological stations. The standard statistical procedures were used for calculations of probable weather parameters used in designing civil structures. The availability of the quantity of ground and surface water that can safely be extracted or diverted was assessed. The volume of water available for different purposes was determined.

Malawi: Detailed Engineering Design and Construction Supervision of Mphande Irrigation Project.

This was an irrigation project which covered the site identification and confirmation, Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, preliminary design of the system, final detailed design, cost estimates, financial and economic analysis and supervising the construction of the irrigation scheme. Under the feasibility study and preliminary design the following tasks were carried out topographic surveys, qualitative and quantitative assessment of water resources, assessment of land use capacity, irrigation agronomy, assessment of socio-cultural aspects of beneficiary, environmental impact assessment and development of environmental management plan.

Malawi: Environmental Impact Assessment and Development of Environmental Management Plan of Chibula Irrigation Project

This was an irrigation project where the consultant was asked to conduct environmental impact assessment and develop environmental management plan for the project area.  The consultant was asked to do detailed design and produce tender documents for the project. The preliminary designs were reviewed and appropriate amendments were made before going to final detailed design phase. Under detailed design the following tasks were carried out; prepare the detailed design of the headwork structure on the river, prepare detailed design of main, secondary and tertiary canals, prepare detailed design of canal structures (distribution boxes,  drop structures, flow measuring structures etc.), preparation of detailed design drawings of the designed structures and bills of quantities were produced.

Malawi: Assessment of Land use and its Capacity for the Development of Kanthuwalya Irrigation Project.

This was an irrigation project which covered the site identification and confirmation, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies and preliminary design of the system. Under the feasibility study and preliminary design the following tasks were carried out topographic surveys, qualitative and quantitative assessment of water resources, assessment of land use capacity, irrigation agronomy, assessment of socio-cultural aspects of beneficiary, environmental impact assessment and development of environmental management plan, economic and financial analysis.

Feasibility Studies and Preliminary Design of Malawa Irrigation Scheme, Malawi

This was an irrigation project which was carried out in Chipata district and covered feasibility studies and preliminary design of the irrigation scheme.  Environmental and social impact assessment for this irrigation development was also carried to determine its positive and negative impacts and environment management plan was developed. The following issues were addressed; soil erosion and sedimentation in the catchment areas where the site is located, flooding and water logging, water borne diseases (malaria, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, diarrhea and dysentery, cholera elephantiasis and skin sepsis), fertilizer and pesticide application, effects on quality of water on downstream receptors, resettlement of population affected, changes of stream flow regime and rising of water table.

Survey Design, Preparation of Bidding Documents and Construction Supervision for Tapukwa Irrigation Development, Malawi

This project involved a detailed design for the irrigation project was done and the construction of the project was supervised by consultant. The preliminary designs were reviewed and amended as required. The detailed design of intake structure across the main river and respected spill ways were prepared taking into account the peak flows of the river and design capacity of the irrigation system.

Lowershire Irrigation Project, Malawi

This project was in two phases.  In Phase I the overall objective of the proposed study was to aggregate the engineering and socio-economic data compiled during previous investigations on the Lower Shire Valley and to formulate an irrigation project based on a sound farming system capable of meeting the socio-economic needs of project participants.  Agricultural development would involve production of rice, sugarcane, tobacco as the main crops as well as livestock, fish and agro-forestry. This was a design o fan irrigation infrastructure that to irrigate 42,000 hectares of land. The irrigation structures to be constructed included an intake from Halmiton falls, intake structures, main canals, secondary canals, tertiary canals, drainage and road network.

Malawi: Design and Built of the New Kasinthula Headworks

This was a design of irrigation infrastructure that included access roads, canals, minor bridges and box culverts.  The Consultant was also required to design intake works as well as designing of the main and minor conveyance canals.

Malawi, Design and Build of Mgombe Irrigation Project

This was a design and Construct project. The Consultant was required to design and build intake works, suction and, rising main, pump house, main and lateral canals, drainage access and other structures. The water was to be pumped from Lake Malawi. The project was financed by the Government of Malawi under Department of Irrigation Services.

Malawi, Design of Nandumbo Irrigation Project

This was a “design and build” project where all components for irrigation development were tacked.  Ground survey was carried out to establish the irrigation system. Various alternative source of power for implementation of the project was assessed to establish the most feasible cost effective and technologically friendly as well as sustainable option.  The agronomical, farmers’ organizations, community facilitation and capacity building, marketing and operational and maintenance aspects were all covered in designing this irrigation scheme. The project was carried out for the Malawi Ministry of Water and Irrigation.

Malawi, Design and Built of Dzimphutsi Irrigation Project

Detailed design for irrigation scheme including two main dams on Nkuzi River was carried out.  Irrigation and water for domestic purpose was conveyed by gravity through a pipeline.  Construction and planning of the project was carried out with full participation of the community who offered their labour during the entire implementation of the project.  Extensive capacity building through workshops and on-the-job training was undertaken especially for operation and maintenance of the scheme.  Seven fish ponds were also rehabilitated as well as domestic water points.  The civil works was commissioned by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation with funds from SADC and DANIDA.

Malawi, Survey Design and supervision of construction of 12 New small scale irrigation schemes in the northern region of Malawi

The work entailed site verification, feasibility and detailed design.  The specific objective of the assignment was to assess survey, design and supervise the construction of new irrigation schemes totaling approximately 285 ha in Rumphi and Chitipa districts in the Northern Region of Malawi.  Economic and Financial analysis was carried out for all sites costing more than US100, 000. The assessment aimed at verifying the gross are, make determination of development options, topographical survey, assessment of land use and capacity, irrigation agronomy and socio-economic issues were addressed.
